Terrazzo Restoration

Terrazzo cleaning and maintenance

Terrazzo cleaning comes down to two simple rules: use a neutral pH cleaner, and sweep or dust mop regularly so sand doesn't accumulate on the floor. Most everything that goes wrong with a finished terrazzo floor traces back to one of those two being skipped.

The short version

There is no maintenance program to buy and nothing to reapply. A properly restored floor is finished.

  • Use a neutral pH cleaner, and change the water when it turns gray
  • Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum regularly; tracked-in sand is what actually wears the surface
  • Keep acidic and alkaline products off it, including vinegar, bleach and bathroom cleaners
  • Skip mop-on wax and the shine restorers sold at the grocery store
  • Mats at exterior doors do more for the floor than any product

For commercial floors

Many of the same principles apply in commercial areas, but the proper maintenance can depend on how we finish your floor. Commercial terrazzo exists in a different environment than residential terrazzo and we tailor our process to your floor.

If we restored your terrazzo and you need information on maintenance give us a call. If we haven't, we will tell you the best way to maintain your terrazzo when we inspect it to give you a quote.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best cleaner for terrazzo?

A neutral pH cleaner, diluted per the label, with clean water. Zep Neutral Floor Cleaner is an easy to find, affordable cleaner that fits the bill.

Can I use a steam mop?

Sure! Polished terrazzo isn't too picky as long as you stay pH neutral, which steam is.

My floor looks cloudy after mopping. What happened?

If this was your first cleaning of a freshly restored floor, you probably just need to remop with more water. The first cleaning can take extra water to remove all the dust.
